Today is the International Day of Persons with Disability. Since 1992, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been celebrated annually on 3rd December around the world. The theme for this year is ‘Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want’. This year’s celebration is unique because it coincides with the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
According to the United Nations, about 100 million children are living with disabilities worldwide and 80% of these children live in developing countries. In developing countries, individuals, especially children living with disabilities face numerous challenges such as exclusion, discrimination, and lack of suitable and affordable services. Many children with disabilities in Africa are homeless and without adequate food. Children with disabilities and their families have the right to an adequate standard of living and are also entitled to subsidize or free support services such as daycare, respite care, and community-based rehabilitation programs.
The theme for this year draws attention to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how these goals can create a more inclusive and equitable world for persons with disabilities. Some of the SDGs include ending poverty in all its forms everywhere, ensuring healthy lives & promote well-being, promote peaceful & inclusive societies for sustainable development, and reducing inequities.
The time has come for the world to take a more sincere interest in children with disabilities. Children with disabilities can be helped, they can contribute meaningfully to their community. The world can provide a friendly and suitable environment to celebrate abilities and as we say in the Early DLC Centre, help them reach beyond their limits!
